Nathan & Jessie (Saturday, June 23, 2018)
We first had Nathan Rivera & Jessie Andra Smith here at frogstop for our last concert of 2017, and that concert confirmed them as two of our favorite "local" performers. A lot of people have asked when we'd have them back, so we want to continue the momentum by having them again early this season.
We put "local" in quotes because Nathan & Jessie have traveled the world, playing streets and stages from New Orleans to Paris. Their music is an acoustic roots fusion of gypsy jazz and swinging folk, played on resonator guitars, accordion and clarinet, topped with tight, engaging vocal duets featuring multilingual lyrics. When we saw Nathan & Jessie at the fall 2016 Folk Alliance Region West conference, they thrilled a large audience with their official showcase performance. We later caught them in one of the intimate small, hotel room performances the conference is known for. As Jessie and their bassist launched into their first song, Nathan came strolling in from the hotel hallway, playing a beguiling clarinet line. Smiles broke out all around -- these guys just make us happy! When I think of Nathan and Jessie, the image I am struck with most is their natural synchronicity. Their personalities, both personal and musical, appear seamless. The point is, you never really know what you are going to get. And that's the great aspect of being part of their audience - you get to experience the freshness that they create over and over again, two musicians who are totally in touch with the nuances of their own music and confident enough to continue to experiment, explore and engage, creating their own journey, and taking us along with them. - Larry Thompson via Echo and Buzz Local Music Publication We've created a YouTube playlist to introduce you to Nathan & Jessie.
