We last hosted Eve Selis here at frogstop in 2008 (our inaugural year!), and we are so excited to welcome her back this year. Eve will be joined by her songwriting partner (20th year anniversary this year!) Marc "Twang" Intravaia and "Cactus" Jim Soldi (ex-Johnny Cash band), two of the finest guitarists you could hope to see onstage together. Eve and the band’s recent UK tour was highlighted by a performance at the legendary Abbey Road studios.

“One of the best shows I've ever seen in the U.K.”
Bob Harris - The Bob Harris Show, BBC2

“The Eve Selis Band erupted in an acute explosion of Americana, wailing and twanging and thundering and throbbing, conjuring demons and angels alike. Damn, that woman can sing!”
Buddy Blue - Blue Notes

“Eve Selis isn’t just a “singer” — she’s an emotion transducer who converts country, R&B, blues, folk, and rock ‘n’ roll signals into a megawatt zap that galvanizes everyone in its path. The power of Selis’s voice can arc-weld material from almost any genre into a personal manifesto.”
John D'Agostino - Taylor Guitars On Review.

Picture
Jack Tempchin is performing solo acoustic throughout 2011, playing his hits unplugged, touring with "The Stories Behind the Songs", and we're fortunate to have him here at frogstop on May 21. Jack shares how he penned two multi-platinum hits for The Eagles: “Peaceful Easy Feeling” and “Already Gone”, both on the best selling U.S. album of the 20th century, The Eagles: Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975. And how he's had a total of 5 songs cut by The Eagles.

In the 1980s, he co-wrote a string of hits with Glenn Frey for Frey's solo career. In 1995, his co-write "The Girl From Yesterday" made it on to The Eagles Hell Freezes Over CD. In 2007, Tempchin landed “Somebody” and “It’s Your World Now” on The Eagles’ latest multi-platinum CD effort, Long Road Out of Eden. Jack Tempchin’s songs have been covered by many great artists over the years, including: George Jones, Emmylou Harris, Glen Campbell, Dwight Yoakam, Jackson Browne, Chris Hillman, Tanya Tucker, Patty Loveless, Trisha Yearwood, Randy Meisner, Richie Havens, Sammy Kershaw, Tom Rush and New Riders of the Purple Sage among others, and his tunes have been sampled by Jay-Z and Coolio.

Season 4 opens Saturday, April 30, with Gregory Page

Frogstop House Concerts Presents:

~The Gregory Page Welcome Back Home House Concert~

An amazingly enjoyable evening of music and stories from Mr. Page's adventures on his international tour.

Gregory Page is a product of his own imagination. He was born in London, England on Easter Sunday in 1963 to Armenian and Irish parents who met while they were on tour with their bands en route to the Middle East. The boy showed little interest in academic or business studies and was always fascinated listening to 78 rpm records on his grandfather's phonograph.

Upon escaping to America he began a series of odd jobs, namely as a cab driver and cook; he also began tirelessly writing and recording his own brand of music.  It's hardly an exaggeration to observe that the voice and music of Al Bowlly had a definite effect on Page's career.

Mr. Gregory Page's new self-released album "Once & For All" is a tip of the hat to Al and the Sweet Jazz from another era. Recorded by his longtime friend Jason Mraz, "live" on April 5th 2010, the new album features some of San Diego's finest Jazz Musicians. There is an indescribable sense when listening to his music that you have uncovered a secret. Like the music of Al Bowlly, Louis Armstrong, Harold Arlen & Cole Porter, Page is not inspired by American music -- he is American Music.

"The tightrope my music teeters upon is the struggle between tradition & progress, history & fantasy. I am the songbird & the worm." ~ G. Page

Three of San Diego's most respected singer-songwriters in one show playing together on one stage. TRIPTYCH is comprised of the celebrated triumvirate of Peggy Watson, David Beldock and Joe Rathburn. This is not the first time that Beldock, Watson & Rathburn have shared a stage together under the name TRIPTYCH. In fact, these award-winning songwriters have shared stages with many notable local and national artists, and they've performed at numerous coffee houses, clubs, house concerts, festivals and concert series across the country. But getting the three of them together doesn't happen often and we are very pleased to welcome them to our stage. This show promises an evening of incredible songs, played out with rich, emotion-filled vocals, great harmonies and stellar guitar work (did we mention how great these guys are on guitar?), performed by three very good friends who invite you to join them for an intimate evening of musical magic.

Ah yes, the famous "squint" photo... Berkley Hart will be back at frogstop on Saturday, May 15. Mark your calendar, call a friend, and join us for a great night of live music.

Hailed as masters of both two part harmony and dazzling song craft, over the past ten years, Berkley Hart have established themselves as one of the premier acoustic duos touring the country. In concert the duo shines, the obvious camaraderie between these two top songwriters driving each performance. Add in virtuoso playing from both Jeff Berkley (guitar, percussion) and Calman Hart (guitar, harmonica) as well as their good natured humor and it’s easy to see why the two have become live favorites.

Season 3 opens Saturday, March 27, with Four Shillings Short

Four Shillings Short are giving the west coast a thorough barnstorming at Gaelic Catholic masses, various coffee roasters, and (happily for us) a stop at frogstop in San Marcos. With over a decade of touring in the US and Ireland under their belts the husband and wife duo of Aodh Og O'Tuama from Cork, Ireland and Californian Christy Martin live as full time minstrels. In a single night, Four Shillings Short perform Traditional Irish and Scottish songs, tunes and airs, Indian Ragas, Folk Ballads, Old-Time songs, Medieval and Renaissance instrumentals and a cappella numbers as well as contemporary folk and original compositions. Their sound has been described as "wondrously diverse", "truly refreshing" and "alternative neo-Celtic folk of the first order".

2007’s Attitude and Gratitude has the duo singing about war in the hopes of bringing peace; a cover of Eric Bogle’s “And the Band Played Waltzing Mathilda” about the cannon-foddering of brave Anzac soldiers at Gallipoli; a trance-folk version of “Green Grow the Rushes,” the tune our boys were singing when they went marching to Mexico in the 1840s; and “The Wounded Hussar,” a traditional about the death of cavalryman by a river’s edge. This is but part of an extensive repertoire of songs that have been hits for at least 500 years.

Post-concert Pleasures (#3)

A belated thanks to everyone who came out for the May 30 Berkley Hart show. Our first time indoors, and what a great sound from the guys! We hope you were able to buy a copy of the new CD on the way out. If not, be sure to visit the Berkley Hart site to order one (or many!).

Shout-outs to Patty Kattus for enthusiastically responding (on short notice) to our plea for help, and to Chiara Sutton for running the lights (excellent job!) and answering Jeff’s quiz about Order 66. (And yes, Jeff, you are indeed a Jedi master in the real world.)

As always, we love hearing from people after the show. From M.E.M’s Facebook page:

Berkley Hart house concert in San Marcos CA.
Beautiful harmony and great humor. Thanks to our host and hostess who so graciously put us up.

And in an email from P.K:

What a great show last night! I had such a great time and I know my sister and friends did as well! Thank you so much for the invitation.

We continue our streak of having no real collection of photos from the show. (And to think: We passed up two perfectly good offers and went with a no-show. Forgive us, Lorinda and Andy!)

We’re working on nailing down our next show(s); you’ll be the first to hear!

We're opening our second season at frogstop on May 30 with Berkley Hart, and our timing couldn't be better. The guys will just be coming off a performance at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville, Texas. And May will mark the debut of their 5th studio album, "Las Vegas", so we're eagerly looking forward to hearing the new songs, along with some old favorites.

Hailed as masters of both two part harmony and dazzling song craft, over the past ten years, Berkley Hart have established themselves as one of the premier acoustic duos touring the country. Post-concert Pleasures (#2)

We flew out of town the day after the concert (a pleasure trip), and returned a few days ago to finish the clean-up (an activity that generally falls somewhere below the pleasure line). So this is the first chance we've had to update the site.

But what a terrific concert! Eve is such an outstanding singer, and Marc is just immensely talented. And such great songs!

One of the big post-concert pleasures for us is hearing from folks who attended. This time, from J&K:

Eve and Mark's concert was fantastic! The sound system, lighting, seating, and every last detail was handled perfectly. We'd like to thank you for opening your beautiful home to us for the evening and for all of the hard work you obviously put into the preparations and refreshments. We hope to have an opportunity to do it again!Cathy managed to get a few photos during the concert (go to the Gallery to see these), and a very short (35-second) video:

Looking forward to seeing you all at the next concert. Stay tuned!
